Eurasion Milfoil Watch

Wow!  The survey reports are in, and Adirondack waters fared well under the careful watch of dedicated volunteers from both near and far. There were no new invasions of aquatic invasive plants reported this survey season - the first since the monitoring program's inception!

Here are the preliminary survey stats:

In the 2007 survey season:
90 lakes and ponds were surveyed (79 lakes received repeat surveys, 11 lakes were added to the program this year), by 136 volunteers (65 volunteers continued their participation in the program, and 71 volunteers were new this year), who logged over 720 hours.

To-date:
193 discrete lakes have been surveyed since the beginning of the monitoring program in 2002, and 303 volunteers have logged nearly 3,000 hours conducting early detection surveys.

I'm so very grateful for your help to protect Adirondack waters from invasive species.  Invasives are a long-term challenge, and your role in the Park's long-term monitoring program is essential for success.  Thank you!  If you helped to organize a team of volunteers, please be sure to share my gratitude with them too!

Buck Pond Lake Stewardship 2007 news release

The invasive species plant Southern Naiad has been seen in and around the Railroad Bridge area between Lake Kushaqua and Rainbow Lake. Please help prevent this plant from spreading. Click here to download a fact sheet.

In 2006 Region 5 DEC installed 2 plant receptacles with signage at Buck Pond. They are still handing out the RLA "Courtesy and Safety" flier with invasive species information, including how to clean boats. As was done in  2005, again in 2006, with help by a grant from the Lake Champlain Basin Program, the RLA hired Paul Smith's College stewards to meet with boaters on weekends to educate about Eurasian Waterfmilfoil and Southern Naiad and to inspect and clean boats.
This year RLA will begin a program of volunteer stewards to add to the time that PSC covers. (I am still waiting to hear from LCBP about a grant for 2007 stewards. We should have been notified by now and it should be here any day.) Call Joe Deignan if you want to volunteer 3 hours for this volunteer stewards  program.

The Association funded a three year professional aquatic plant survey of Rainbow's waterways which was completed in 2002. In an effort to maintain a milfoil-free environment, RLA volunteers will continue to conduct regular warm weather inspections annually.

Pat Willis, Watch Chair, appreciates all the volunteer time and effort that has been donated to survey the lake for signs of milfoil. She can be reached at 518-327-3433, or email.

Want to help? Surveys are done at your own convenience during July and August. You do the shoreline once; it takes from one to a few hours, depending on the distance you sign up for.

List of Volunteers: Lynn Kurtz, Joan Allen and Family, Noel Prellwitz, Hillary Appell, Ralph Bennett, Bob Zapletal, Joe Deignan, Stephanie Ratcliffe, Caroline Hambley, Jeff Tennant, Ted Glowa, Barbara Silber, Charlotte Mitchell, Kathy Bonham, John Fallone, Nancy & Jim Hauber, John McKeon, Joan Sleinkofer, Robin Smith, Dylan Van Cott and Pat Willis.

Old Business:
  • RLA's Milfoil Watch Committee met in late October 2002 with representatives of DEC Region 5 to discuss ways of handling the threat of Eurasion Watermilfoil to our waters. The Committee urged DEC officials to take action at Buck Pond by improving boat wash facilities and improving signage at the campground.

  • With DEC's agreement, milfoil information will be printed on the back of each copy of RLA's "Courtesy and Safety Standards" for boaters which is distributed to Buck Pond campers. A new version of RLA's handout covering the milfoil threat was prepared and distributed for the campground opening in 2003.
